was wondering if any of you guys could help me out ..I have the above engine (not sure of the year tho-1988-1991 seems a good bet as the parts match up to browns point parts search listing.)when I got the engine it had'nt seen much action for a while so I changed the plugs and drained the fuel out and put some fresh in, it fired up ok but would alarm on start up,I'm new to engines and thought that this audible alarm was just the way all engines started now i have second thoughts
the meter on the dash reads the oil level and there is plenty in the tank, although i have not renewed the 2 stroke oil-could this cause me a problem? the engine has run but I'm very hestiant to give it lots of throttle until I find out what the problem is,any help would be greatly appreciated thanks Roy.

Re: SUZUKI DT 65

that motor has a float switch to monitor engine water ,it fails.
I would clean the oil tank and filter before running and mark the tank and run 6-10 gallons of premix(as per the owners manual for engines stored over 6 months) before relying strictly on the oil injection.
a service manual about now will be your bestest buddy.
you can read it now or at the rebuild, still costs about 45 bucks.

Hi,
I had a DT65 (1991).
You can determine what Year your DT65 is in this way:

Assume we have two outboards with these serial nr:
Outboard 1: 6501 11045
Outboard 2: 6501 F-10928

a) For newer Suzuki that first digit in second part if the serial nr like "1" in a nr like 11045 for outboard 1 above determine year. So that "1" is normally the year it was made, like 1981, 1991 etc.

b) But between 1975 and 1979 the year is determined by "year-letter" before the engine number like for example "F" in "F-10928" for outboard 2 above.

A=1975, B=1976, C=1977, D=1978, F=1979 (notice there was no "E" letter)

So on our example outboard 1 was made 1981, 1991 or 2001 possibly ("1" in serial nr).
Outboard 2 was made in 1979 ("F" in serial nr).

The alarm:
Possibly the water flow switch that is defect, but that is only a guess (I had actually a defect water flow switch on my DT65 once and sure the alarm went on).

If impeller (waterpump rubber wheel) has not been changed for many years that would be high on a "to do list". Also the thermostat is a thing that can fail (can stuck open or closed for example). It is possible to remove the thermostat cover (but risk the bolts will break - it did on my DT65, and helicoil can be used to repair) and test in a pot of hot water that the thermostat open and close at specified temp.

/Bo

Re: SUZUKI DT 65

Strange old weekend with the boat and motor, firstly the engine would'nt start up took off the top and noticed the starter motor still engaged so knocked it down and greased it-engine fired up straight away went to sea, the engine would fire up imediately with no problems, then for no reason I would turn the key and get nothing starter motro was fine fiddled with the wiring to the starter and it started up,but could not see anything loose, also when fired up the it sounded as if it was'nt firing on all the cylinders, but then would kick in and roar away sounding great,at another start up engine running fine but soon as I push the throttle forward put the engine under load it would just die,so now I think I've got some dodgy electrics to fix and a blockage to find somewhere...any ideas would be great, thanks roy.

start from one side and tighten all the electrics wires and bolts ..... the most common problem that this particular engine gives is the fuel pump diaphram, they are really cheap to replace ....
