Suzuki DT 75 burnt piston

I'm new to the boating world and thinking about purchasing a Baja boat with a suz. DT 75 motor. It has a burnt middle piston but the engine still turns over fine by hand, the currnet owner has off the head to see the damage. The boat with a trailer I can get for $650, maybe less, he wants to get rid of it. A mechanis in NH said it would be between $1,500 and $2,000 to fix the motor. I have some mechanic experience on VW's and BMW motorcycles,and wondering if this is something I could fix. How does that price sound? Would I be better of finding a used motor,or finding a different boat, what else should I know? Thanks for any help.<br /><br />Andy

what year is the moyor and is it a saltwater used motor. if the head came off without braecking any bolts odds are it will come apart. bore all 3 holes and check the rod big end play . replace the wristpins and pin bearings and fix the original problem that caused the piston failure and that motor will go a long time.<br /> good luck and keep posting

I just rebuilt my 3 cyl yamaha.<br />Cost about $100 for each piston, rings, wrist pin and needle bearings. So $300 for the parts for a 3CYL.<br />Paid about $100 for the rebore from an engine rebore specalist including removing 3 bolts I cracked on the exhaust/cooling cover.<br />If the big end is knackered, it'd be more costly.<br /><br />If you can rebuild you Airhead BMW this should be a piece of cake. I had friends with holes burnt in the cylinders of their GS's due to running too lean. It was mostly due to carb problem or lambda sensor problems on the newer models.

I've never actually rebuilt an engvine but have taken them apart, I did take off a piston once and put it back in, maybe I could strip it down znd then bring it to the mechanic. Hmm how can I tell if the crank is bad without taking it apart?
