First, thanks to bossee and stinger for great advice - I got my impeller changed on my 1981 DT65. It sprays water now from the tell tale hole. I notice that water also flows from a hole on the front of the lower unit at about the vertical level of the water pump. Is that normal? Also, there is exhaust gas coming out with the water from the tell tale hole. Is that normal? Thanks for any info.

Hi Lumpy
I ‘ll try to be clear even if it is not easy. I do not understand what do you intend as tell tale hole. I presume you are talking about the pilot discharge hole. If water pump is OK, you have to see the water coming out from the pilot discharge hole indicating that impeller is OK and, when the engine reaches the right temperature, from the exhaust hole mixed with the exhaust gas indicating the thermostat is open. On my DT55 there is a small hole on the front leading edge of the driveshaft housing just above the gasket between the housing and the lower unit. I do not remember if the exhaust gas can get out also from this hole when you run the engine out from water. If no water is present in the circuit, at starting it is necessary to wait few seconds before to have water coming out from pilot discharge hole, it may go out some steam, I do not believe that is exhaust gas, but I’m not sure.
By the way, when you turn the ignition key does the buzzer on the remote unit sound? On my previous 1990 DT30 yes, on my actual 1994 DT55 no. Bye

deejaycee 2000 and stinger, thanks for the info. Stinger, sorry if I wasn't clear. By "tell tale hole" I was referring to the hole in the back of the outboard just below the cowl. That must be the exhaust hole that you refer to. The hole on the front of the outboard, at roughly the plane of the water pump, does not have exhaust gas coming out of it, just water (when the motor is on). Sounds like all that is normal... When I turn the ignition key there is no buzzer noise. Thanks again, Lumpy_63
