My suzuki 2000 dt85 runs great on muffs but when I put it in the water it dies about 5 seconds after starting. I can Maually rev it up and it will stay on but as soon as I go back to idle it dies. I can keep restsrting it until I run out of battery and it starts emmidiatly.

When was the last time the carbs were cleaned? Do you have a good stream of water coming out? There is no load on the motor while running off of muffs. When you put it in the water it goes under a slight load due to the water pump and back pressure from the exhaust. I'd start with the carbs first. Good luck.

Re: Suzuki dt85 will not run in water

Thanks, yesterday i ran mercury power tune through the carbs and then took it out. still died. I came back and gave it a shock treatment with yamaha ringfree on muffs and after doing it for an hour I got this moment thought. I covered the exhaust on the prop and at the top and the engine only slowed down but i could not make it die. would this be enough back ressure as in the water
Thanks

You gotta take the carbs off and physically clean them. Power tune and friends is for decarboning the cylinders.

I agree if the carbs haven't been cleaned in awhile you'll need to pull them off, disassemble them and give them a good cleaning. Be sure to install them exactly in the same place as you removed them. Don't swap carbs. Keep any cleaner away from the gaskets or they will deform the gaskets. You might try at first to pull the low jets out and cleaned the jets with a carb cleaner and blow them out. Be sure to clean the needle on the screws too. It's probably more in the carbs but you can see what this does first. I believe the correct adjustment for the screws is 11/2 turns out from lightly seated. +-1/4 Good luck.

Run a compresson check to make sure all cylinders are in good shape before you go very far into motor. low compresson will not produce much power. I have had a blown head gasket on a 35 Johnson that ran ok on muffs but not the water.

Good point. Anytime I have engine problems the first thing I do is a compression check. It's a given to me but sometimes when giving advice I forget to mention that.

Re: Suzuki dt85 will not run in water

i hope by now you have found and fixed your problem. but wanted to let you know i had the same prob with my dt85 last year. it ended up being the fuel quick disconnect fitting for the fuel line. i eventually knocked the ball out of male end and threw away the female end and connected the rubber line with a hose clamp.
just wanted to share my info in hopes that it may help anyone else save time and money in the future.
