I got a 1999 mercruiser 3.0 with an Alpha one Outdrive.

Can I swap the 3.0 motor with a 3.7L 470 Mercruiser with out many problems?
If I do ,what problems or changes would I have to do to install the 3.7L into my 1999 Bayliner Capri 1950?

I like that the 470 is water cooled.

I was wondering if they would just interchange with the outdrive an all without having to change out alot?

If there are issues, I have a guy who has an older Mercruiser 3.0 that is running strong I can get. Is there any issues swapping an older 3.0 with my new one?

All help would be greatly appreciated.

You like the fact that the 470 is water cooled?? And what do you suppose cools the 3.0??

If you want a solid reliable boat stay with the 3.0, if however you want a boat that will need expensive repairs that no one can parts to fix go with the 470. When they run they run pretty good but when they start to run bad look out. I'm not sure but I don't think the two are a direct interchange anyway. I'm sure someone who knows for sure will tell you.

The 3.7L is a good motor, If you maintain it and don't let it run hot, It will last and give you good service. That being said , the 3.0 is a more reliable motor, and lower maintenance.
One way or the other good luck

The 470 will mate with your current Alpha I, but you will have to put in a stringer for the front engine mount (located differently). I am almost positive that the engine wire harness is a direct 'plug and play'.

I have both the 470 and the 3.0L in different boats, and the 470 has been sitting for the last two years due to overheating. The 3.0L is rock solid, and a dream to work on by comparison. The power ratings for both are not as far off as you may think, since the 470 was rated at the flywheel and the 3.0L is rated at the prop.

Do a search here for the 470 threads, and get a 'feel' for what you would be getting into.

Happy boating!

You may have all types of problems. Mercruiser never used the 470's with an Alpha I Gen II outdrive. I suppose with enough custom fabrication of the exhaust system, and gear changes in the outdrive, you may get it to work. But why ??????? The 470's were never the most popular engine out there, and they aren't even made anymore. Unlike the 3.0L.

Ok I get it, dont do it. So I found a 3.0 for a great deal but its an Generation 2 and I have a Generation 1 engine. I just posted a new thread asking if anyone knew what snags I may run into or if its a no issue swap

Here is the new thread:

HELP: Swapping a 3.0 Alpha 1 Gen2 with a 3.0 Alpha 1 Gen1 Motor

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anybody have any insight into what I will need to do/change to swap a Mercruiser 140 3.0 Alpha1 Gen2 with a 140 3.0 Alpha1 Gen1 engine?

I have a 1999 Bayliner 1950 with a Mercruiser 140 3.0 Litre engine. I need to replace it. I found a strong running 1989 Mercruiser 140 3.0 Litre engine that I want to use. I was told I need to check to make sure it will drop in before I buy it. He says the bellhousing and flywheel may not line up, but he's not sure. I am hoping someone here has done the swap and has experience with what snags I may come across.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Not exactly the same, but I swapped in an 87 140 in place of a bad 91 3.0. Easy swap. I had to change the valve cover for the newer style shift and throttle linkage. Bellhousing, flywheel and coupler interchanged with no problems.
