I have a 1995 trophy with a alpha sterndrive. A good deal just came up on a brand new bravo III and am curios if there is any possibility that they can be swapped out. ANy info would be appreciated thanks I can get serial numbers later if that helps.

Depends on what engine you have, and what the gear ratio in the B3 drive is. Then all you have to change is everything but the engine. Transom shield and all.

Re: swapping alpha lower unit for bravo III ?

Ok so swapping lower unit for lower unit is out of the question. So does the lower unit on a duo prop mate up to the gear housing in the same fashion as a single prop unit. Where is the assembly that turns one prop the opposite direction in a duo prop? I know these are pretty stupid questions but I have no experience with duo props and have only owned one outdrive and was hoping that swapping to a duo prop could be achieved by changing out the lower unit alone.

Bush, The Mercruiser Alpha drive is now "unique" in that the shifting mechanism is in the lower unit. The Bravo series and all current Volvo Penta drives do their shifting in the top of the drive.
As far as what drives the two shafts in a Bravo 3 (or a VP DuoProp), there is an extra gear and propshaft in the lower unit, yes. But that still doesn't solve your problem. The Bravo and Alpha series are not compatible in any way. And there is no such animal as a dual propped Alpha. Sorry.

And add an engine driven seawater pump.

Back to your original question,

Here's an example of what you'd need to "swap it out"

Or this

You didn't say what engine you have nor did you say what the drive ratio is of that Bravo III. Chances are you'd need to get different props too (depending on your engine if it comes with props.) You would probably be able to use your trim pump and power steering pump and other accessories. As indicated above you would need to add an engine driven raw water pump.

It's "do-able" it's just not cheep....you have to remove/replace everything. It's not just a "bolt it on the back" proposition.....

Regards,

Rick
