1992 Mariner 40HP. I noticed some play in the housing where the motor swivels (turns) in the transom bracket. There seems to be about 1/16" play at the bottom between the shaft and bearing/housing. Is this normal or do I need to replace the bearing and seals. There is no mention of this assembly in my Clymers manual at all. Its the only thing thats not covered it seems ... just my luck.

I should mention that this play translates into about 1/4" play down by the prop. I can grab the skeg by hand and move the motor frwd/bkwrd about 1/4". The only place I see any play is in the swivel bracket.

There are no bearings in that swivel bracket, but there are a couple of bushings that could be causing your concern. Are we looking at the tilt tube swivel or the main steering swivel. That kind of play is probably not of any concern either way.

Main steering swivel is the concern. Good news it seems, looks like I'll continue to run it as is. Thanks.
