you also have to loosen the steering arm pinch bolt before the pin will move.

naahhh. Mine is so wallowed out it has free play! When I first took the boat out it hooked a hard left at 35mph. That's how loose that arm is. You should have seen me trying to dock it. 50% skill 50% dumb luck.

Okay so I went back at it for an hour this morning with a 5lb slide hammer and a 7/16 hardened bolt. It wiped out the muscle in my forearm which surprised me. I then took a larger hardened chisel and tried to break it free from the swivel shaft where it clamps but all it did was destroy the top of the ring. The swivel shaft seal is completely gone and that's why it's so bad. The ring is resting on the bottom of the steering pivot and I'm afraid I'll break it apart if I keep going with the slide hammer. The only thing holding the ring in is the gimbal ring itself and the swivel shaft so I'm taking the easy way out and am going to cut it in half since I've already chunked up the top of the ring and my arm muscles hate me.

Since I already have a nice ring already painted it makes no difference at this point. Way better than blowing another $600+ on a decent used transom assembly.

Does anyone know is the nuwave SS pin is worth it? The spare I have is in decent shape.

IMO yes and no, if aluminum and stainless come in contact with each other the aluminum will loose (if paint comes off ring), but the stainless will not corrode like the original. If your in salt water and the ring is painted well I would go for it, not so much in fresh.

thanks again! Stainless it is. May as well pack the 7/16 hole with grease and plug it.

No Title

it's done. The pin and the gimbal ring are one piece from all the corrosion. No matter what I would have tried it would not have came out. I would have busted the transom assembly first.

By the way it took 2 minutes per side with a good metal blade and sawzall to do this.

Glad you got it out. Dumb question, but you did loosen the bolts on top the ring?

I did they actually came out without a fuss. I couldn't get to the steering arm clamp bolt with my pass through but it didn't matter because it was so honed out.

There is a good amount of rust below the swivel shaft bushing in the transom housing that I'll have to knock off. I'm hoping the wall of it is in good enough shape to where I don't have to repair it before pressing in a new bushing and seal but we'll see. Everything thus far has been worse case scenario so I have no more optimism for anything I'm getting into. I'm just expecting the worst.

I have found over the years that an air chisel will do a much better job as a rule breaking things loose than swing at it with a hammer. Find a good one though, the cheep ones will not have enough strong hitting power to do what you want. They make cold chisel bits for them as well as the exhaust bits. You may find if you can get the correct angle on it that it just may jar things loose in short order.

So, are you going to install the grease fitting while apart?

Sorry for the late reply. I remembered this after every single thing was back together. I don't mind pulling the plug out of the transom assembly and greasing it every year or so. It was a silly oversight on my part but since I already drilled the two holes and have plugs it's not SO bad.
