The new OEM water jacket gaskets (dark green) are to be installed dry also as they are silicon impregnated and seal when they get some heat to them( reason for retorque)Aftermarket gaskets just need "peanut butter" or aviation gasket sealant. The exhaust deflector that bolts to block internally is the one that needs resiweld. See rule #1

Now the oem gasket is quicksilver? I believe I used aviation gasket sealer, loctite brand, on it. You know, it would be a lot easier if they would slip a small set of instructions inside the gasket kits. Also, can you clarify what you mean by, "the exhaust deflector that bolts to block internally"? Mine is sandwiched between the block and the exhaust cover and bolts are external. The water jacket is internal.

Quicksilver is the OEM gasket from Mercury....

See attachment below...#13 is the inner exhaust deflector, #18 is inner water jacket plate and #20 is outer cover. When it comes to silicone you will not find it used anywhere on a outboard powerhead or listed in service manual.

I have used it too. Once I couldn't get a truck's tranny pan to quit leaking. Tried everything and finally got some of that....trying to remember the name. We used it in industry all the time and an avaition store near Dallas' Love Field had it. Anyway, later on I found out that you don't glue both sides....one side yes, both no as the pan has to wiggle to maintain the seal.

Am with you on special function gaskets and wouldn't use a sealer on them as you say...they are self serving. On special functions, I use Kopper Koat spray on every head gasket I replace and never had to go back on one.
