Andrew----read the entire article. It is all speculation---which occurs in the market every year. What is the price of corn today? If the article was complete fact, corn should be selling at three times its current price.

So the carryover is only 2 billion bushels. That is what sits in the bins and rots.

What is your point?

By the way, this conversation was about oil---synthetic vs. dino. And the last comment was asking why people are afraid of synthetics.

I say it is marketing (which includes the artificially cheap price of dino products) that keeps people away.

The concept of Sythetic Oil is a scary thing. My dad wouldn't put it in his Lawn Mower, even if I bought it for him.

I think the Synth Industry needs to recruit the Liberal Left, The Evironmentalist and the Media. Maybe the name Synthetic needs to change to something less threatening. Perhaps right here on the Forum we can coin the new phrase and name for these oils.

I think Mobil-1 did it right by not mentioning the synth word in the Name....

AndrewT, Ya mean kinda like the Left does to disguise it's real meaning and intent? Like say, coining the phrase "pro choice" when they really mean "pro abortion" or how Bill Clinton began to refer to taxes as "contributions" or how 'bout calling tax cuts, to taxpayers, "an excessive, irresponsible expenditure"? And let's not forget one of their best examples, calling a proposed reduction in the growth of a budget item a "budget cut"

I have been using Mobil 1 in every engine I own from lawn mower to race car to boat. Corvettes and Porches come from the factory with Mobil 1 and it is required to keep your warrenty valid. I learned the value of synthetic many year ago. I have a 30 year old high pressure air compressor for filling scuba tanks. It was constantly having problems with the valves. 20 years ago I switched to synthetics and have not had a problem since.

Buttanic

Here's some subjective evidence. The military and the airlines have been using synthetic lubricants in their aircraft engines for years. If they are good enough for jets, I would hazard a guess they just might work in car and boat engines. Personally, I've used Mobil 1 in my cars for years and their engines never burn oil or wear out before I tire of them (usually 150K plus miles). I have not been able to find a straight 40W synthetic yet for my boat engine. I did find a synthetic blend and used it when I winterized my boat recently. So I will test it next spring and let you all know how it works out. BTW the engine is a Mercruiser 260 (350 cid Chevy) with Alpha One. Have not changed the drive oil to synthetic yet. This dialog will help me to find the right one.

Boomyal, YUP that's exactly what I mean. I find it amazing that the automotive industry as a whole hasn't come out and made a complete committment to Synths... It's like people associate this with BIO-Engineered Corn. Heck, we aren't drinking the stuff. Just doing the math on the oil saved comes up to some pretty big numbers.

I might actually agree with the WACKO-INVIRO's if they would spend as much time educating the public about Synth oils as they do trying to get you and me to drive a YUGO...

Now hold on there! That's the last straw.

I love Yugo's. They keep gas and oil consumption down, they don't take up much room in parking lots, and they aren't hauling a lot of wasted mass around.

In other words, I enjoy blowing by them like they don't exist, I can swing my huge doors wide open without hitting them, and it won't be me in the pine box when they slam into my gas-guzzling SUV!

So there!!

Steve

Speaking of Yugos, if yall haven't heard it yet, go to KaZaa and see if you can find a copy of Paul Shanklin's "in a Yugo". It is an incredibly well done parody of Da King's " In the Ghetto". Guarantee it to be good for Muchos Carcajadas.

All this Yugo talk reminds me of the 2000 movie "Drowning Mona" where all the town residents drove Yugo's. Pretty funny show.

I would say this thread has deteriorated to the lowest mechanical form -- the Yugo.

As for the outdrive lubricant I an more conserned with water contamination from a leaky seal than wear so I change it often. I use regular 80W 90 gear lube from the auto parts store and buy it by the gallon but I see no problem using 80W 90 synthetic of the same weight other than the cost.
For the engine I use 10W 40 Mobil 1 in my 120 Mercruisr.
Buttanic

Volvo penta owners manual recommends full sythentic for engine oil and gear lube. The blocks are the same GM products so I don't know what mercruisers deal is on syn oil.

Not that I like to get a last word in or anything----but Boomyal--you asked who is keeping the price of dino oil artificially low.

It's the same folks who fought seat belts in cars for 25 years at GM because they cost $3 per vehicle. And the brains at Ford who would not retrofit 1978 Pintos with a $2 rubber bladder in the gas tank because it was more "cost effective" to fight the lawsuits of burn victims.

Someone said Volvo approves synthetics in their motors. Merc will be along soon---they copy everything Volvo does. (Oh, by the way, Volvo was also laughed at when they put seat belts in passenger vehicles in the 1950s.)

Re: Synthetic in a Mercruiser I/O ??

Buttanic:

Ive studied oils for quite some time, both engine and gear oils!! So what I am about to say has some validity!!

Be VERY carefull about using plain old gear lube in your lower unit if you do not know its capabilities!! Standard automotive gear oils do not have the anti foaming abilities that marine gear oils do and you may find youself in trouble if you run very long distances! We all know that oil mixed with air is as good as no oil at all!!

More expensive, Hi performance gear lubes usually contain anti foam agents, but not all!!

LubeDude
