Anyone have experience using synthetic oil. I have a new Tahoe with 4.3 190 and am ready for the first oil change. I use Mobil 1 in everything from lawn mowers to SUV and have had no problems but Mercury says do not use in the owners manual.

Do a search sumcat. You will see that this topic has been talked to death.

The pro's on the board will advise you to stick with the factory specified oil. Especially since the boat is new and this is your FIRST oil change!. Anything else will void the warranty you know?

Re: Synthetic oil

sumcat, you're going to start another oil debate! :D I use mobil 1 in my boat, it is a 1991 3.0 Merc and haven't had any problems. My suggestion to you would be: use whatever merc says to use until your warranty is out. Merc has a pretty good synthetic, it is just more costly!

I use mobil 1 in my 4.3 190hp Volvo, basically same motor and Volvo recommends synthetic. Since you have a warranty I would probably use the Merc oil. My local Walmart had the Merc oil a week ago.

Don, I really appreciate the TSB. I not only hadn't seen it, but didn't know it was out.

How'd you get that "new Tahoe with 4.3" in a boat?

Re: Synthetic oil

The main advantages of Synthetic vs Petroleum are more fluidity at sub-freezing temperatures, and more stable at high operating temperatures. Neither should be a factor in a boat motor. But if it makes you feel better, go ahead. Just don't use a non-recommended viscosity. Finding anything other than 5W20 to 10W40 is pretty tough.

Has worked pretty well in my E150 for the last 192,000 miles. In fact it works so good I never even change it. Every 25k miles I change both oil filters, add two quarts and away I go. The 4.6l V-8 uses one quart in 6000 miles and carries about 12 -1500 lbs over gross vehicle weight. Is that what you were gettin at OC?

Re: Synthetic oil

I wouldnt advise using "ANY" synthetic oil for the first oil change reguardless of brand. How many hours have you ran the engine?

Re: Synthetic oil

Also for us old motor owners, synthetic will leak if you gaskets are questionable.

Keep in mind that Mercury Marine not only developed the Corrosion Salt Fog Test for FC-W marine rated oils, but they worked very closely with the NMMA in establishing parameters and procedures for the FC-W marine ratings. The Corrosion Salt Fog Test is one of the primary factors separating FC-W marine oils from automotive oils.

The reasons Mercruiser did not recommend synthetic oils in the past were because some synthetic oils, particularly those with insoluble additives, were not adequate for marine use. And some synthetics provided inadequate corrosion protection for marine environments. Mercruiser recognized the advantages of synthetic and synthetic blend oils, thus their big involvement with FC-W. FC-W was one way to have synthetic oils meet the specific needs of marine use.

Don has provided the information you need.

Thanks for the many replies.Looks like I will use Mercury oil thru the warranty and then see whats out there.I'll check Wal-Mart.Didn't know they had Mercury products.I have about 25hrs on the engine.Been running OB's.First I/O since '96 and it was an easy to work on 3.0.Don't know how anyone works on this 4.3 in this model boat.

Re: Synthetic oil

Why does my service manual and for that matter the service bulletin that DonS posted, list straight weight viscosities for operating below 32 degrees?

Is that for people who use their Bayliners to bust ice in the Weddell Sea?
