synthetic or merc. oil ?

Anyone know the truth about using non merc oil in I.O. engines? Mercruiser claims you should only use their oil ,but I prefer to use synthetic.Engine is not under warranty so I'm not worried about voiding it. I was going to use 10 w 50 in a 5L engine. <br /><br /> Jim

cuzner....I don't think you will have any problem using the synthetic of your choice. They have been proven time and time again to provide better protection in 4 cycle engines. Because of the fact that you have no warranty, you don't have to worry about using the merc. oil and you should use the synthetic because you have no warranty. I would guess that Merc. doesn't even make their own oil, at least the 4 stroke oil, and that any synthetic will work great. You may want to post this on the I/O board and see what kind of responses you get. Good luck.
