98 johnson 115hp 60 degree 100hrs While crusing to a fishing hole, 4000rpm I noticed the tach reading zero it came back in a minute or two. after a 20 minute ride I slowed to around 1000rpm looking for the hole where we were going to fish and after 10 minutes the engine quit and would not restart. I checked for fuel at the engine and it was present. I checked for spark and found none. The starter cranked fine. after being towed in I tried, but it would only crank. Came back two days later looking for the problem and it started easily and ran for 15 minutes at the dock.
Any ideas? Ken

A lot of times when the tach quits, it's the rectifier gone south but that results in the battery not charging. I think I would start with the rectifier. They're easy to check out with a VOM. A defective rectifier can stir up enough magnetic flux under the flywheel to cause the engine not to fire.

c/6

Hooty

Thanks for the reply .I have a Clymers manual but it's not very clear on were to find the rectifier or how to test it. Is the a website that you know of. I do have a multimeter. Ken
