tach erratic then stopped, 225 evin 1994

port eng 225 evinrude 1994, tach started bouncing around then quit altogether. also getting no power to the port side gauges at all now???<br />any suggestions??

Sounds like the rectifier/regulator. the tach gets its signal from this unit. Check the regulator output with a voltmeter.

i was thinking the same, it happened on the star eng 6 months a go and replaced the volt/reg and fixed it. this time though on the port eng i lost everything on the port guage panel. where dose the port guages get power from?<br /><br />thanks for the reply<br /><br />regards

After re-reading your post I see that ALL the gauges for the port side are dead. For all gauges to quit I would suspect a broken wire, either a common ground or 12 V .. Check the wireing to these gauges.

Check fuse that supplies the aux power to your panel.

Several things to check before buying any parts. Is the motor charging (measure voltage with a VOM across battery terminals with motor running). You should get 13 to 13.5 vdc at idle and ~ 14.5 at cruise RPM. Typically a dead tach suggests either a charging circuit problem (which may be a broken wire, a high resistance connection, a failed regulator/rectifier and/or a failed stator. I would eliminate the simple cheap stuff 1st, then make sure you know the cause of the failure before throwing 100 to $200 parts at it.<br /><br />Good luck.
