Tach not working

The tach quit working for my '96 mercury 40hp. The motor is mounted on a pontoon boat. It quit working about a month prior to storage for the winter. I don't notice any broken or disconnected wires. Any ideas?

It could be corosion under the lugs, or at the 3-conductor plug at the control. Or maybee the movement (needle or magnet) in the gauge rusted-up.
