tach question

I am trying to get my tach working again. I have tested my rectifier with a DVM on the bat with motor off then running and get just under 16v. Connected DVM to ign and grnd on back of tach with no power when key is turned on. Removed tach and connected jumper from battery to ign and grnd. If I am guessing correctly this should make the tach zero out. Any thought on this?

Re: tach question

Yes your tach should have went to zero or slightly moved when you done this.
It sounds like you may have two problems. First, the tach may be bad since it didnt move at all when you hooked up the 12 volts.
Second, you should have had power to the tach after turning on the key. Possibly a blown fuse or a bad ground? I would suggest fixing this problem first and then go from there with your tach problem.
The rectifier is ok.
What year, model engine is this?

Re: tach question

1982 175 johnson. Just found these forums and have been reading alot about setup and such. tach worked when I got the boat about 2 years ago, just quit working one day. spent the cooloer part of the mornig under my dash trying to figure out my wiring, man what a mess. many unplugged and cut wires.

Re: tach question

Your tach should have a 12 volt positive wire when the key is turned on, a ground and a tach pulse wire that is usually gray. It comes out to the control shifter, from the engine.
I know what you mean about the wires. I had to straighten out my wiring when I first got my boat too. The thing I have learned about wiring is this: if you hook it back up the way it goes, usually everything will work the way it is suppose to. To many times people who dont have a clue as to what they are doing (not refering to you) will cut and splice and mess up wires trying to repair them.
If you dont have a book on your boat I suggest you invest in one.

It normally does not take me a year to respond to these types of questions. I live in NW Fort Worth
