ok so using this diagram ive located the gray tach wire..
http://forums.iboats.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=69035&d=1285636655

Now the gray comes up from the engine and goes into a small plastic cylinder that says 5 amp max.. theres the grey from the engine. a ground. and the wire that comes from the buzzer all going into it..

now my question is how can i get that gray to the tach on the dash. can i just splice into it and run a wire from there?

Re: tach question

It is a 3-pin socket connector.
Extend the gray to Tach (pulse), RED to B+ and Black to ground.
That output is only intended for engine instruments and is why the output (B+) is limited.
BRP has a special accessory cable extension that fits straight into the plug, but you may extend however you like.

Re: tach question

What year make and model engine are we talking about here? The tach wire passes through nothing. It comes directly from the ignition on the engine. Depending on the engine and control box you are using, there may be a connector just below the key on a side mount control box (like Johnson & Evinrude). If this is a Merc, the wires are pigtails that come out where the harness goes into the control box. +12 volts and ground can be connected to any other gauge on the dash.

Re: tach question

You may even buy a loose connector and pins from a dealer and make your own extension.
From pics shown, it looks like a OMC/BRP system.
The plugs and pins are the same as used in the engine wiring harness for ignition parts etc.
Any BRP dealer should be able to help you.
It is a 'plug-and-play' system.
