tach question

Hi everyone !

I recently had a tach installed on my boat.
The boat is a 1990 15' Boston Whaler with a 1990 Johnson 70hp VRO engine.

The first time I used the boat after the tach was installed and shut the engine down I noticed the needle was pointing at 1000 rpm instead of zero.

I started the motor back up at which time the needle would move to about 900 rpm , however there was no fluctuation of the needle.

I tried this engine off and on procedure several times, yet when I shut down the needle would go back to reading 1000 rpm.

I tapped and then rapped on the tack trying to un-stick it with no luck.

I called the mechanic who installed it and was told not to worry that it will work fine while I am under way.

Even I , who knows nothing about these matters would think there is a zero on the tach for a reason and certainly the needle should be bouncing around a bit while I am at idle.

So finally my question(s): Do you think I have a faulty tach ? Can this problem be fixed with an adjustment to the tach ?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated !

Regards, Dennis

Re: tach question

The needle will "float" when the engine is off. Turn the key to "On" (without starting the motor) and the needle should go to 0. Start the motor and the tach should respond to engine rpm.

Good luck!

Re: tach question

Dhadley... You were right on the money.

I dropped by the slip, turned the ignition to on and the needle dropped just as you said it would.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Regards, Dennis
