Hi all!
I have a 1986 35hp mercury that I want to hook a tach to.It had an OLD Airguide tach that didn't work. I'm not sure how it was hooked up, and it only had 2 connectors on it. I do have a grey wire in the harness that's not hooked to anything and does give me a reading when I hook an old-time automotive tester to it, of course it's not correct, but it does send a signal. When I shop around for a new tach, I see specs I don't understand... like 6p or 8p or needs sender, or alternator type, and I never see anything that states it will work on a 2 cylinder. Most say 4, 6, or 8 cylinder. I'm soooooo confused. Does the grey wire sending a signal mean that I have a sender already and just need the right tach? Do I need to be concerned with alternator/rectifier stuff? How can I tell which ones will work with my 2 cylinder. I'm really lost about this stuff, so when you guys stop laughing at the newbie, I would really appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks in advance!
