Re: Tach Wiring Connection
I'm not sure if this is correct for you, but I had found a .pdf file online a few weeks ago from Electrical Products (part of Teleflex, Inc. ) .
This relates to their tach's I believe, but I don't know why the wiring wouldn't be the same for most.
It says if a harness is not used run a wire from 'GND' (Ground) terminal of guage to electrical system ground for all installations. Then run a wire from 'LT' (Light) terminal of gauge to panel light switch, or the 'LT' terminal of another gauge. Then run a wire from 'IGN' terminal of gauge to 'IGN' terminal of ignition switch, the 'I' terminal of another guage, or other switched power source.
It says for Evinrude, Johnson Outboards to check dash end of engine wiring harness for a Gray or Gray/Yellow wire (may be inside of control box). If present make sure engine end is connected to alternator at terminal strip on powerhead not to Ignintion system. Connect end nearest to dash to 'SEND' (sender) terminal of tach.
If Gray or Gray/Yellow wire is not present in harness, locate Gray or Gray/Yellow wire on terminal strip on engine powerhead.
Connect a wire from 'SEND' (sender) terminal on tach to gray or gray/yellow wire on terminal strip. Set selector switch on tach as shown. (they include a pic)
I can't find a link online, but if you want a copy of this, I can try to scan it in and email it to you. It might be helpful, it might not be. They did have one for a 96 & newer engine, not sure of the difference.
