Hello..

Can anyone tell me where I can connect the wires for a Tachometer on my 40hp Evinrude 40072A..? I have a wiring diagram etc.
Also where can I make good connections for some Navigation lights, and radio, behind the dash panel..?
ie.. where can I get a supply that is from my generator..?

Thanks Derek Alltree BC Canada

The first question is do you have a generator. If you do then you will have a rectifier. The tach can be connected to one of the two output wires from the generator that feed the rectifier. Lights etc are connected to the accessory connection on the ignition switch via the required fuses.

You get the accessory supply from the battery. The generator is hooked to the battery. Run a fused 12 or 14 gauge wire from the battery terminals, or where the battery cable hooks to the starter solenoid. The ground can be run from the engine block or the battery.

The DC generator-equipped 40 does not have a AC stator/regulator like later outboards. Best bet is to get an inductive Tachometer like a TinyTach that hooks around the spark plug wires.

A tachometer cannot be used with that motor UNLESS you have a special magneto tach. They are no longer made, but if you are lucky you might find an older one. Modern tachs won't work. The only other choice is an inductive tach that gets its signal from a spark plug wire. Tiny Tach is one such as that.

Good practice says the accessories should be wired directly to the battery (fused, of course). However, if you want your ammeter to show net charge/discharge including the accessory load, take the positive feed from the brown wire (gen) side of the ammeter. Again, fuse it. That circuit is good for 10 or 15 amps. Run the 12 Ga accessory ground to the battery (-).

Hello there ..

Thanks for that info...
On my boat there is an old "Ohden" Japan, rectangular tachometer fixed to the top of the dash panel with a 4 wire W/Gr/B/R.. cable running to the Evinrude but none were connected when I got this boat. I was just wondering if I could find how to connect this up, If indeed it was ever connected in the first place..!!.
