Tacho not working - Black max 150 v6 *SOLVED*

Hi looking for some help please - I have a black max v6 (91) which runs great apart from no reading on the RPM/Tacho. The speedo and fuel guage are working Ok and also a recent new throttle control box and loom so all that wiring down to the engine is good to go.

Where would I start looking into the cause of my non functioning Tacho? - how could I test the actual gauge and pick up on the engine in some way?

Make sure the tach unit gets +12VDC and ground, Now test the tach wire for conectivity from the gauge to the voltage regulator or rectifier. Now test the rectifier for function, or test the battery to see if the motor is charging. If it is charging, the tach is likely bad.

If it was working before the box/wiring change I would check wiring. If it wasnt working check for imput from rect/reg on grey at tach. You can use a 12v test light and it should be dim and pulsate and get brighter with increased RPM's. If it does tach is not wired right or defective. If no imput to tach check that you have 12v on purple(at rect/reg) to turn rect/reg on. That year should have the big water cooler rect/reg and they are prone to failure ....

Thanks for those 2 x great answers - I will check on what you've suggested and feedback.

One thing to note - I stated 91 above - the outboard is actually an 81 - does the water cooled rectifier comment still stand? Also can anyone tell me what P/N to order so I can replace it?

1981 uses standard rectifier OEM part #62351A2 or you can order aftermart here on iBoats as part # 18-5707

Thanks, I've just ordered one of those as suggested and a volt meter to help diagnose - that along with the new Tacho should have it sorted.

Update - All fixed - it was the rectifier thanks Faz and everyone else for the help!

Easy fix - 2 x screws and three bolts
