Re: tachometer help

you may have to re-set the pole setting of the
tach to match the motor on back of tach.

Re: tachometer help

toadnoles
6 Pole is correct setting. I really don't know what the problem is, other than to make sure all the connections are secure. It may be a bad tach right out of the box. It happens! You might want to try another known good tach and see if that works. That would narrow it down. Did you buy the tach from Mercury when you got the motor? I'm thinking that new motor may require a "Special" tach, to work properly. You've got the gray wire on "Send", 12 Volt to ignition terminal and of course, a good ground on the ground terminal? If all that is right, I would call your Merc dealer and ask them what is up... You might also want to disconnect the harness wiring at the tach and start the motor and use a voltmeter to see if you are getting the correct reading out of the control box. At the sending wire(Gray) from control box to ground you should read 5-7 Volts at 2000 RPM's . 12 Volts from the igntion wire and contiuity to ground. I would have to assume your charging system is working correctly, as this will affect the tach. Take a reading with your voltmeter across the battery when the motor is not started and make a note of the voltage. Then start it up and take another reading and see what it reads. Should be higher and steady.
