Hi all,

Just ironing out the little bugs I'm finding in my 'new-to-me' boat.

I noticed this last fall when I had the boat out after buying it, and would like to troubleshoot it now that the "nicer" weather is coming.

Anyway, the issue is that at times, especially immediately after startup, the tach on my boat (1997 wellcraft, 1997 Evinrude Ocean Pro) will read high, about twice as high as it should. For example idle will read about 2000R when the engine is obviously actually around 1000R. If I tap on the face of the tach it will drop down to where it should be and functions normally until the ignition is shut off again. Sometimes it works fine from start to stop. I've quickly checked the connections on the back of the tach and they're snug.

Do I need a new tach?

Hey Steve,
The first place I would look would be the selector switch on the back. Make sure it is fully seated in the 6p position. Sometimes the switches become loose and gets caught between positions. If it is fully seated, there is probably a loose or broken solder joint within the tach and it needs to be repaired/replaced.
