I am looking to add a tach to my 95 Johnson 28HP. I have been looking at tachs and I see that you need to know how many "poles" you have. What is this? Does anyone happen to know what I need for my motor?

Re: Tachometer Question

I just replaced my tach. The new one was made by teleflex and was adjustable for different poles and applications. There were destrcutions (instructions) that listed motors and what the pole setting is.

Re: Tachometer Question

Does my motor have a tach lead in the wiring harness? I was thinking that I had read somewhere it was the gray wire. Is this correct?

Re: Tachometer Question

Found the chart, according to this:

2 cyl 9.9-30hp (2005>) = 5P
yes mine had a gray wire to send terminal, purple went to ign switch, blk to ground, blue for lights.

Re: Tachometer Question

Just below the ignition switch on the conrol box is a three pin tach connector. Buy the harness when you buy the tach.

Re: Tachometer Question

My switch is not on my control box. It is mounted seperately in the helm. I'll have to see if it has a hook-up.
