model # is J90TLCEM, the tach has a sticker on it that reads( For use on 5-6& 10 pul/rev alter outboard & 6 pul/alter sea drive engine.use position 3 for 10 pul/rev...... the dial that moves has the numbers in this order 2 ,3 ,4,6,5 my tach is set to 4...is this the right # for my motor, I bought the boat used years ago an have too say it all looks stock, all the same style gauges an nothing looks like it has ever been change...The reason I am asking is I am having PROP slip #'s that are way high (29%) at 5800 rpm's an my motor still has more power maybe up too 6100 or even 6300 not sure.So I decided too take a look at the wiring on the tach... thanks for any help

The tach operates off of the engine's charging system that emits 6 pulses. Set the dial on the tach to number six (6).

thats what I was thinking, so it is problay showing more rpm's then it is running...I bet the person that had the boat before me change this to show a better reading..I will have to readjust the throttle screw also, I tured it way out too keep the rpm's down.I bet my prop slip is going to go way down also...And my idle problems will also be fixed, it run's good but the idle seems a little rough at 800 rpms...This is a very good reson too have a TACH, but make sure it is set right no matter where you buy the boat from....thanks

well the idle is now set too 700-750 an is fine I was wondering why I was having too set it so high...WOT the boat is now at 5400(it was a windy and choppy day). didn't have a gps but it was the fastest this boat has seen, before I was scared to go any faster with rpms so high 5800 plus, not sure how high it would have gone too. This boat just keeps getting better and better............

At 5400, the engine is propped pretty close to the factory recommended 5500. That engine would probably still perform reliably if it was propped to run 5600 or 5700, or about one prop size difference.

I believe that I can get a little more out of it. This test run was on a windy and choppy day.Right now the fin on the motor is 1/2" above the bottom of boat and sounds and handles very solid ,it is not a digital tach so it could be 50 -75 rpm's either way. Also the fin could be cutting back some, I might still try it without the fin too see how it handles. As of now I am very pleased.. with the way the boat handles an preforms. It gets on plane very fast with 2 people just a few sec.'s ( 4-5) I don't need too had too my hole shot, it will put you in your seat...Thanks for everybody replies
