Tack Question

Ive got a 89 Force 50 horse and i want to install a tack. What i would like to know is, is there a tack just for that engine or is there an generic tack that can be installed. It seemed that the last time i was at my marine store i was told that i would have to get a tack for that engine. I guess could a car tack work and how would i hook it up.

Just replaced the tach on my 85 50hp force.. Look on ebay for a tach for a 20 pole stator anything else wont work.. Faria had made a tach bit no longer sells it ..I found a new old stock one on ebay for 40 bucks new.. Purple wire goes to the sending terminal , black to ground , tap off the ignition switch for the bat terminal and run a hot for the light
