I believe the timing is controlled by the CDI according to where the Throttle Position Sensor tells the CDI what position it is in.

timing on that engine is controlled mainly by the TPS, it can be checked but NOT adjusted.
should be about 3* adtc at idle and about 18*BTDC at wot.
if its more than 2* off at either end something is broke.
the ECU controls the ign timing based on inputs from the TPS,ECT and the knock sensor.
what issues are you having?
