Bought a '96 175 'Rude Ocean Pro. Visually looked at it and that's it. $2500 installed w/ controls ans harness. Luckily, the things runs good. Compression is as follows: port: top 105lb, middle 100lb, bottom 95lb
starbord: top 105lb, middle 105lb, bottom 95lb.
When it idles, every now and then it will kind of "cough" and if its running on muffs, you can see it shoot out a small plume of exaust. Does anyone know what that could be?

You have no exhaust restriction on muff's, so it is running lean. Also do a sync & link, you could have a carb opening early.

Your explanation, and that compression reading, indicates that the carburetors are somewhat fouled resulting in the engine running in a lean condition. Running lean affects the pistons, pistons rings, bearings, etc..... not a good idea.

Remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetors (all) with complete kits.

Wait a second. Does the air/fuel go through the carb.s, circulate around the crank case, then get pulled into the combustion chamber? If that is the path the fuel/air follow, then I can see how a lean condition would affect the rings, bearings, etc.

Re: Talk about a Gamble!

I was reading this thread and my motor has been doing this cough on idle. It is a 175hp ocean pro. 1999 model with oil injection. I took it out earlier this year after it set up for 9 months and when I would slam the accelerator. It would stall. I wasn't sure if it was partial to having some old gas so I continued to run it. That problem seemed to be getting better as i run more fuel through the engine but i still have this hickup on idle. It seems to run great at higher speeds however.

Am i potentially damaging my engine by running it like this? I was hoping to try to change my plugs this weekend and see if it clears the problem up. The plugs haven't been changed since i bought the motor. I doubt this motor has very many hours on it. I wish there was a way to find out how many hours are on it. No hour meter. I just don't want to shorten my motors life at all. If the plugs don't solve my problem, I will rebuild the carbs this fall and winter. Anyway, what do you guys think?
