Very nice video.Would love to see it moving at speed.
As a youngster in the 1000 islands summers. We kept our boat in south bay wellsley island.circa 1958. for several summers there was a PT hull near our dock.I often wondered if it our any other PT survived.Anyone here been up there remember seeing or hearing of a PT up there.Chinewalker, your dad ever talk about the old PT from south bay?

Re: talk about saved from the scrap heap.

There's a couple PT boats on display at Battleship Cove in MA, another is in TX, I remember seeing a show about it's restoration, and at one time, there was what was said to be a converted PT running as a whale watching boat not too far from here and at least one being run as a party fishing boat. Not many of them survived. I would doubt that there are more than a handful still surviving today.

A large number of PT boats were built in north Jersey. I had heard most were destroyed not long after the war.

Re: talk about saved from the scrap heap.

There was one in of all places, Germany, right down the street from us!

It was anchored in one of the harbor fingers all by itself, hooked up to it's own electric source for years. This summer it disappeared. One day it was there, next it was gone. Someone said it had been bought by someone in Homburg, and was headed for a complete restoration. Don't know how true this is, but it looked to be in not that bad shape for a ship that age.

Seems to be some great secret here. War toys are not that popular in this country, and those who restore them, tend to do so quietly, out of fear of becoming a target of the activist. Old War Birds, the like, and such ...

It had been sealed against the weather, at all openings, and stripped of all above deck fittings, so it was hard to judge it's true condition. But if you squinted your eyes, you could still see it in it's former glory.

Lets hope it will once again cruise the seas as the proud beast, it once was.

nice video.

but, i have to wonder. how far can one go with a restore before its technically a rebuild?
they found it sunken in the water, right? seeing how its made of wood and took then 15 years to restore, i would imagine that most of it needed to be replaced. if they replaced most of the wood, its not really the same boat anymore, its a recreation of the origional boat that was made piece by piece while disassembling the old boats rotted parts. probably could have built a replica from scratch (in far less time) and gave it the old boats name, and nobody would know the difference.
