You bet I'll blame the tankless system. It is mounted exactly halfway between the two water usage areas. 10 feet to the kitchen, and 10 feet to the bathroom, all hot water pipes are insulated, the thing is a pile of crap.

Sounds like it isn't starting properly then. Have some one watch the heater when you turn on the faucet. Sounds like the flow sensor isn't working properly.

Over here (UK) tankless heating systems are everywhere. Indeed even in my house. I don't know what you get there but here we simply call them combi boilers. One of the best combi boilers is made by Bosch under their Worcester division: http://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/homeowner/products These things are great and some have a mini built in store that provides pre-heated instant hot water.
They are now all also what we call condensing boilers (US must I'm sure have this too) and so have an efficiency of at least 90%. If you take their 30CDi model that can heat water by 94F at a rate of over 3.4 gallons/m. They do other clever stuff too like if you want your home to be X deg at Y time they will know when to turn on to achieve this without wasting any gas etc...

Ours is a condensing type.
So they are available in North America.

I have an electric water heater. With all the laundry and showers etc we use a lot of hot water. I would like to install a tankless electric unit.

I am looking at this unit. I need to upgrade my electric service from the current 100 amps.

I have been on the phone for hours at a time with a tech from California twice. They had the local dealer send out a tech, he was here the first time for four hours and on the phone the whole time. After each phone session a whole box of parts comes in the mail. The last time the Tech was here he placed a bunch of parts, and spent five hours on the phone, and nothing has ever changed how the unit works. The flow sensor is one of the parts that has been replaced each and eveytime. The only thing I will give the company is, they are standing behind it.

Sounds like you have a faulty unit. Probably should have mentioned that in your first post so he didn't think all tankless water heaters wasted a lot of water.

I love simplicity, when our natural gas water heater finally died after 14 years of use, I installed another one.. The total cost was right around $260 with the fittings and such that I needed.
