tapping noise

just fired up the engine 1st time for the season..there is a tapping noise seems to be coming from the left side towards the back no particular pattern to it.....seems to be more pronounced at lower rpm's did not make this noise last fall when I hauled the boat out after fogging any ideas on this ? thanks

What motor? May be a shutter clacking at idle or a little above.

Ayuh,.... Burnt up shutters is my guess,...... they live at the very top of the y-pipe, under the rubber boot,.....

I tracked down a sound like that with my mechanic's stethoscope. On my OMC Cobra the flappers are fiberglass/rubber and they will make a lower pitched knocking noise sounds like an engine knock but with the scope you can hear exactly where its coming from. Port side flapper. Damn near drove me nuts after I did my top end overhaul.

Definitely the exhaust shutters..........

PS Tony you got your boat in yet? I gotta find someone good to do my bottom paint, I will do the drive but will not do the bottom, you know anybody good, western Suffolk Cty?

Ahh sounds nice...weather will be good...I'm going up to Lime Rock Park in Ct for a Trans Am race....I've thought of doing it myself....but lying under the boat sanding that toxic stuff is just not for me...mine was done with the hard epoxy Pettit Unipoxy so it has to be done every year. I thought of getting it all taken off and going with a multi season ablative...if I didn't have to sand..that would be different....
