I am new too boating, and I just bought my first boat. Its a 1988 Starcraft Medalist 1901. I live in the state of Ohio. I dont know what I need to do as far as title work goes with a boat?? I bought the boat about 2-3 mths. ago and I got it notorized out of the preveious guys name. But I have not put it fully into my name. Does it work like a car title??? Also, the trailer?? The guy I bought it from didi not have a registration, but he gave me a bill of sale?? How does that work?? Do I need to get some kind of inspection??

Re: tariler reg.

Check the Ohio DOT website. The trailer will most likely need a title to ever get plates for it. Its different in every state.
I have 2 trailers with no title but a bill of sale and can not get it registered...
NC is the worst state anywhere to deal with trailer registrations.

Re: tariler reg.

the boat WILL have a title but NOT the trailer
what I had to do was go to the title office they will give you a weight ticket, you have to get the trailer weighed

then with the weight ticket and bill of sale they registure
the trailer to you.

the bill of sale and the title from the old owner will be transfered to you and a new title will be issued for the boat in your name.

Yes thats exactly correct, one thing I mignt add. If you can't find any numbers on the trailer just use the brand name for the registry, I didn't have either so the teller just said think of something, so now my trailer registration says 20' Chaparral. Seriously!

Re: tariler reg.

woosterken, that would be the boat and trailer getting weighed at the same time, correct?? Well all that is going to have to wate. The boat is pulled apart, putting new deck & stringers in!!

Gary H NC, thanks for the links!!

Re: tariler reg.

Usually a tag on the frame rail or maybe there is a number on the axle you could get by with....
So many trailers the tag or serial sticker wears off..
My 1981 trailer has no numbers period but i was the second owner and the seller had all the original paper work.
I think you weigh it empty...not sure for Ohio.
Lived there for 20 years but that was back in the 70's and early 80's.

if you know what kind it is you mite beable to get in touch with the builder to get a weight,if they are still around.
