Re: Ted Williams 4.5hp

your motor is a 1972 and should not be that hard to get running. a spark and compression test will tell you if its worth trying to resurect it. a cheap way of doing this if you don't have a spark and compression tester is to prime the cylinder plug and see if she pops for you, if that occurs usually a good carb cleaning and you should be good to go. the pump element may need to be replaced, i found out the hard way on that part but thanks to many knowledgable people on this website they got me going again.many of the parts of the carb are tecumseh parts and any small engine shop should be able to get them for you.almost all the parts are in a standard rebuild kit (needle, seat,bowl gasket,float) the pump element is 630953 and they should be able to cross reference that over to an oregon part number. good luck.

You are a lucky man, rbb - it has points, not the solid state ignition. I'd do like narwhals said - check for fire, and if you have it, give it a taste of fuel, see what it does. If you have a fuel delivery problem, again narwhals is right - if you replace that 'duckbill' fuel pump element, keep in mind that it has to be put in there with it's slot at 45 degrees;

Wow! This is definately the right place for help. Thanks for all the great info. It doesnt have a plug so I have to find one. If i'm using the sears link you sent me correctly I think i need a champion rj12yc/85. I will try to get one this week.

Re: Ted Williams 4.5hp

fuel ratio from 1970-1973 is shown as 24-1, although with the newer 2-stroke synthetics you could run 32-1. start with the 24-1 ratio and do a plug check after running at top end for a period of time the plugs should have a chocolate brown color. i recommend having a spare plug just in case it fouls out. i know that the later models can be run at 40-1, even at 50-1 in the newer models mid to late 80's.

Re: Ted Williams 4.5hp

Hey thanks everybody! I got it runnining so i decided to take it out on a small river by my house on my big canoe, in case it didn't run I could paddle back, it ran great until I hit a sunken branch & sheered the pin. Ouch! I now have some oil leaking from the lower unit. I don't think I hit hard enough to crack it. At least I cant see any crack. I'm not sure how to proceed. I'm not real familiar with marine motors. Does it take regular lower end fluid like my big 90hp mercury does?

Re: Ted Williams 4.5hp

yes the lower unit takes 90w gear lube oil probably the same as your big unit. sometimes what you might see is some extra 2 stroke oil dripping from the bottom of the lower unit. if you do the maintenance on your other motor it should be similar, check to see if the fluid is milky white or not, milky oil indicates an leak in one of the seals, if your clean then you can refill the lower unit and be on your way after you repair the shear pin. good luck

Re: Ted Williams 4.5hp

I hate buying shear pins, so I went to my local welding supply with a shear pin, and got a 3 foot long brass brazing rod the same diameter. Some hardware stores have 1 foot pieces of brass rod for hobbyists in small diameters, too. I never go out without 4 spares. If you cut the rod the right length, you can de-burr the ends with a file or a grinder.

I don't mind being hi-jacked. Can anyone tell me where I can get that tiny little o-ring that goes on the end of the feul valve shut off?

O rings for the standerd Eska fuel shut off are fairly common little buggers and come with most carb kits as jet valve packing rings which I have yet to find a Eska carb that need them, so go to the hardware store or a marine shop and take you valve with you and they can fix you up, don,t let them feed you a line of bull about any special packing rings....you want the O ring to fit really tight over the valve....works for me and they should last you a year or two.

Re: Ted Williams 4.5hp

I have a Ted Williams Sears 4.5 hp outboard motor I believe it is a 1974 model 217-59460, I am new to having an outboard, I see above that the lower unit lubricant is 90w gear lube oil, could anyone tell me how much oil it will take and what is the best method of changing it, is this the proper spark plug Rj14yc, since my model no. is different than the motor mentioned above. EDIT
