Ted Williams 7.5 hp motor # 217-5889-1 can?t get it to start and just floods using the internal gas tank and the gas goes out the exhaust pipe, I get a spark and everything looks good except the fuel pump element has a cut in it? I was told it was for the external tank , could use some help

Re: Ted Williams 7.5 hp motor # 217-5889-1 gas problem

I had the same problem on the same model engine a few years ago. If you want to just use the internal mounted tank here is the solution I used. I took the carb off and removed the gasket. Then I took some gasket making cork paper and made a gasket for the carb but I didnt cut the hole that operates the fuel pump. What is happening is the intake vaccume opperates the pump as it pulsates. If the pump element has a hole in it the vaccume sucks the gas into the engine and floods it. The gravity from the tank being above the carb should be enough to fill the bowl. While you are in there I would take the bowl off and make sure the needle and seat are in good condition and working right, that will help aid the flow of fuel. Another option is to get a new fuel pump element. Good luck.
