I must be getting old as I am finding out that I am more and more like my father every day. He hated my teenager speak and now....I have a 16 year old son that can't talk like a human being most of the time. Am I alone in not being able to understand the new teenager speak????

Re: Teenager Speak

I wonder if my valley-boy style of english will be considered 'old-timer speak' one day.. As long as that girl on NPR's Fresh Air still says 'like' every third word, I'll know I'm still safe.

I've been lucky enough to not hold an actual conversation with anyone under 21 in a long time. Do teenagers still exist? Haven't they all grown up by now? ;)

You hit the nail on the head! Text messaging is now being supplemented with text speak:redface: I interview HS students for college admissions and it is amazing how the language is changing.

I can?t understand text messages. I have learned some of the meanings because of this site (BTW, LOL, IMO and that?s about it).
I told my 14 year old niece I knew the meaning of LOL in front of her friends. Her reaction was ?don?t embarrass me".

You are correct, the language is evolving. I can't say any of the changes that are taking place are for the good of the civilization. However, who am I to say it is wrong? Look back at how the language has changed in the past 500 years. I'm sure the "thee's and thou's" speakers of old would look at us just as we look at these texting teenagers.

I can see it now.....a 1000 years into the future someone will find this database of forums. They'll acess them and look at all of these letters that fit together to what appear to be words. It will be like hyroglyphs to them. They'll work for years and years to translate what they found, only to find out the writting seems to be from crotchity old men complaining about teenagers and idiots, and they talk about these vehicles that travel on water and are propelled by hydrocarbon fuels.

I love it when I ask my kids a question and they reply "IDK" or "OMG". Some days I'd like to choke them all!! LOL!

since Im now 32 years old, Im old enough to be seeing the difference.

with that said I tend to toss out "OMG" once in a while since most people give me the deer in the headlights look and then burst out in laughter. I do save it for those situations where things are taking a flaming nosedive where one would normally break out the 4 letter words.

Ah yes and lets not all forget the useful WTF

I have found it rather handy during meetings where only the younger managers understand.

Yes, it is ridiculous how these youngsters are messing around with so many new acronyms that they have coined to shorten communication. ;)
It would be nice if some SNAFU rendered all these $%##@! new-fangled gadgets U/S before the whole English language is completely FUBAR'd.
I'd just call it NFG. :D

BTW, here is a useful URL for help in translating some texts..

My gf is 31 and she'll say things like WTF and OMG and I told her if she doesn't stop talking in "text talk" as she calls it, my parents will not like her. I told her she's 31, old enough to talk normally. Most of my friends are older than both of us and don't know what the hell she's saying.

I didn't know that Bob, you're one hip dude! LOL (errr, umm, I meant that in the laugh out loud context)

IVAZ, that right there is down right funny, all her friends probably think her uncle is a perv (no offense) when you were just trying to make a funny, priceless :D I've done things like that before, open mouth, insert foot, even some where I didn't realize it until hours later and I was saying to myself WT* was I thinking (WT* in the correct context)

Give it 100 years and everyone on the planet will be talking in 1's and 0's

Re: Teenager Speak

Just so I get this right, people actually spell out (so to speak) the acronyms? So they say O.M.G instead of actually saying oh my god/goodness? That's just wierd. I would get more toungue tied saying the letters than saying the words.

Yes they do. Next time you're in the mall or a store, take a listen at the teenagers talking. In my experience, it seems to be the girls more than the boys that are talking in acronyms.

When you hear it you'll be "like OMG, WTF!"
