how do I determine the cable length for my Prolline 170 1997 year with a Mercurury Black Max. I put a electrical snake to measure from the end of both nuts? The Teleflex NFB but the measure is 12.5 feet and teleflex makes a 13 foot helm and cable. How much leeway do I have

Welcome to iboats.
I can tell you that a 12' cable won't work. :D

Since steering cables come in 1 foot increments, you will need the 13' cable.

From Seastar / Teleflex web site.

What length cable do I need?
This depends on two things:
a. Are you doing a first-time control cable installation?
Outboards: Measure from control along unobstructed cable routing to center of outboard. Add four feet to allow for loop which provides unrestricted engine movement. Round up to next whole foot and order that length cable(s).
Stern Drives and Inboards: Measure from control along unobstructed cable routing to shift and/or throttle connection. Round this dimension off to the next whole foot and order that length cable(s).
b. Are you replacing an existing cable?
Measure the Existing Cable as Follows: Measure the cable from tip to tip in inches, and round up to next even foot. Order that length cable.

I've never done a loop they are talking about (add 4')

If you have an existing cable it should be marked.

Amazon Prime is amazing, I ordered a NFB 13 footer fiqureing if it doesn't fit the exchange is no hassle. Just got a text it will be here before 8 pm tomorrow. I've swapped 5 or 6 cable to Hydraulic and they are simple. If the cable is to short, chalk it up to experience. I let you know. Thanks Ezen

Thanks to some friends and a little luck we have a new NFB helm on my Proline. Right of the bat we had to borrow a Puller to pop (literally) the steering wheel off. A 18 year old boat is stuck together. 4 of the helm bolts broke off unscrewing them. The old cable was 12'6" and the new one is 13'0. Another inch shorter would have not made the dash hole. The box says to add 18" to the existing cable casing and round up to the nearest foot. It's on the back of the box and would have made the install easier. But it is in and looking forward to testing tomorrow. Thanks all. ( I consider a project successful if I don't use a blue wrench or more than 5 minutes with a saws-all ) Ezen
