TeleFlex Steering Question

Working on a boat I just bought that has been sitting because of a "broken steering" cable. During the question and answer period with my father-in-law, (previous owner), he said that they were running just fine, then the steering cable broke. The thing is, they couldn't turn the steering wheel. I figured that if the cable had broken, they should be able to turn the wheel in at least one direction? Anyway, I took the steering mechanism apart at the helm, and found some form of a teleflex gearbox thingy. (sorry, I have NO idea what the right term is) It has a single cable going into it, with a portion of the cable sticking out the top. I know I need a new one of these , (kinda pulled it open a little and found broken gears inside?). I don't even know what its called!! For the record it says "SINGLEHELM-SH5023" AND "TWINHELM-5075" on it?? ANY help is greatly appreciated!

Re: TeleFlex Steering Question

Not broke, rusted. Either in the tube on the motor, or internal to the cable. You might be able to loosen it if it's frozen in the tube on the motor, but if the cable is rusted it'll need to be replaced. You can get a complete system for just a few bucks more than just a cable. I'd go with a rotary rack if you have the room. They're much easier to thread thru the boat. Sounds like that's what you have anyhow.
