tell tale flow rate??

Thanks to all you guys that post photos for outboard repair. I just replaced an impeller on a recently acquired 1988 60hp Johnson and the photos and posts filled in the details the shop manual left out. My question now is "How strong should the tell tale stream be" This one is flowing but doesn't seem to be shooting out like I have seen on smaller outboards. I don't want it to overheat.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: tell tale flow rate??

Check the head temperature.
Heat gun is the best but if you can hold your hand there for a 3 second count it is most likely O.K.
Video would be good if possible,
Welcome to iboats.

Re: tell tale flow rate??

interesting question... I have heard from some that good flow isnt visible with muffs on it, in the water is much better..

With my 140 v4 I get a pretty descent stream..certainly not a shooting straight type of flow but definitely a good one..as the negine revs a bit it gets better (on the muffs)

Its hard to answer some questions without looking at it so the comment about a quick little video would be awsome..

do as suggested, let her run for a bit and check temps..its really the best way, as well as touching the flow..if its hot then thats not good..if its cool then i would think you are ok.

Re: tell tale flow rate??

I have an infrared thermometer. What should the temp range be for the head?

Thanks!

Sorry for the incorrect reply - still figuring out the forum rules. What should the head temp be? I have an infrared thermometer.

Thanks for the help!

Just didn't see the quick reply button at first so replied 2x. Thanks for all the help. I'll fire it up tommorrow after work and check the temp. If it is too hot, what should I start looking to fix?

See what you get. If it gets to 180 F shut it down and post back. You could have a blockage / restriction anywhere in the cooling system or hoses.

Re: tell tale flow rate??

I finally got time to work on it again. This time the tell tale was shooting good and stayed cool. The head temp stayed at 126 degrees according to my Kintrex infrared thermometer. I ran it for 15 minutes or so and the water stream was always cool to the touch. Shut it off and restarted a few times and it stayed the same. Last time the water stream was hot. Don't kow what the difference was this time.
