I started my engine for the first time today. Motor was honed and bored so:
1.) 3 new std rings
2.) 1 new .010 OS piston and rings
The motor throttle has only been in the gearshift lock position and that is enough play for what I am doing. The first time the engine got hot and the alarm went off. I took out the thermostat and ran it without it. It didn't seem to be a problem.
3.) 1 new thermostat (it works, I tested in boiling water on hot plate)
Put it back in and a few extra revs after a number of minutes the alarm went off.
4.) the exhaust cover is nice and cool. The head is hot and I can only keep my hand on the fins and thermostat cover cover for 4 seconds.
5.) I am only using ear muffs and the amount of water coming out the tell tale is weak but hot.
Question 1: Is it because of the new components and poor water flow from the ear muffs that my engine is overheating?
I have also noticed some smoke coming from the tell tale holes. I checked plugs and are all oily so it can't be pin holes in the exhaust baffle.
Question 2: Is it possible some exhaust is sneaking past the rubber seal inside the leg?
Any other ideas on this smoke question?
