Temp. of water pump exhaust?

I recently got a 1988 9.9 evinrude, and had the carb. and water pump replaced before I even had it in the water. It runs ok, but the water pump stream seems a little weak, although adequate. However after running it to operating temp., the 'pee' stream feels really hot and the top of the engine feels hot to the touch--I'm able to keep my hand on it though. Is this normal? The guy that did the work is a pretty reliable mechanic.

Put an temp gun on it and see what your running at. Did you change out the thermostat?

He didn't change the thermostat. I ordered a temp gun from Harbor Freight yesterday. What is the recommended temperature?

Head temperature should be 140-145 degrees. Change that thermostat.

It sounds as though it's about where it should be. At 140 deg. F you can hold your hand on the head for maybe 5 seconds before it becomes painful.
