morning folks. i posted this yesterday, but i don't see my post. oh well, hopefully not gonna have a duplicat.

'75 165hp L6, 1 drive

went river runnin sunday. about 110 miles round trip. when i would stop for a breather, shuting down for maybe 10-20 min. at a time. when i'd restart my temp was a little high. not overheat, but certainly higher than usuall. after restart, temp came right back to normal. temp stayed normal thruout operatin range, though i didn't do very much wot. mostly 2200-3200. the only thing different sunday was that it was probably the hottest day i've been out at a shade under a hundred + the long river run. i'm usally a lake boater and the boat don't really get much prolonged operation. can i attribute the rise in temp to the hot day and heat soak. or . am i seeing the first signs it's time for an impeller. i've not done an impeller on this boat. has maybe 125 hrs on it since i got it last fall. alledgely the impeller was changed prior to me buying it. dealer i got it from really gives me no reason to suspect he didn't do what he said. he did everything else he said and seemed trustworthy(heck of a thing to say about a dealer).

my inclination is i should be onto an impeller and see the facts.....any opinions one way or the other. guess i'd prefer to wait till end of season and get on a reg. schedual for R&Rin it. but if it's my 1st sign, i aint waitin. gear oils lookin a little dark too. usein hi pro merc gear lub. least it was dark green.....

Re: temp question

Sounds normal. They will normally raise in temp after a good run and you shut them off.

Re: temp question

Also, if you are worried it's getting too hot, it's a good idea let the engine idle for a while before shutting down. Turning off the engine after running at high rpm's will definitely cause the engine to heat up because it's not moving any coolant.

nw, i wasn't doing high speed runs. wot on my L6 is 3900-4300. i get 4300. i was running 2200-3200 for an hour + at a time. just mulitpule, long sustained runs, which it normaly don't see on the lake. i aslo did let it idle a bit prior to shut off. though maybe not long enough. a min or two maybe. since i wasn't runnin high rpms, that was part of the reason for my concern.........thanks again for the feedback......

Re: temp question

In this type of question, being on plane is considered a hi speed run. It's when the engine is placed under a working load.

Ayuh,..........

That's as logical, sensible explanation as Any, Right There................

I think just Watching,+ Waiting for the Scheduled Maintenance will do Just Fine..............

thanks dons for claifying that for me. it was on plane the most of the time and doing work.

it seemed that way to me to, but since i'd never seen my gage have that behavior before, even on the river (though last time there it was much cooler). i thought i'd ask and see what the word was. sounds like i'll proceed as usuall.......thankyou all.........
