1970 Johnson 115hp
-----------------------------------------------
Well, I finally got a new temp sending unit to replace the one that fried out. This is the one in the starboard head.

The water jacket cover is off and I pried out the remnants of the old unit out. There is a metal plate left in the hole that I assume the new unit butts up against. My questions are:

-what order do these things go back together?
-what gets sandwiched where?
-how is the unit sealed into the hole?
-how does the rubber stopper fit into the hole on the water jacket?
-who designed this thing?

Thanks, as always,
Dan

Dan....if that metal plate in the hole looks shinny and not part of the head, it's gotta come out. It's part of the old temp sensor. Clean the hole out real good before installing the new one.

With the hole clean, I usually will coat the rubber part of the sensor with some gasket sealing compound to help it slide in and seal it. Put the new gasket on and then the cover plate. It's a tight fit in the hole for the sensor so make sure the hole is real clean.

I don't know who designed the thing....some engineer on crack probably.....:)

Thanks for the help as always OBJ!

I cleaned the hole out down to where the head material starts. The metal plate looks like maybe brass (dulled up) that is attached from the other side of the head.

Dan

Scratch the previous post, I did some further prodding and removed two metal plates to get down to the head. I cleaned it up pretty good, the new unit slipped right in and everything is back together. As soon as I get up the guts and a good chunk of time, I will do a compression check on this thing (cross your fingers!).

Thanks again OBJ for all your help!!!!!!!!!!
Dan
