temp warning

Hi, I have bought a 95 merc 60 hp and the temp warning won't sound. I found a tan/blu wire coming out of the block, it joins another tan/blu wire which goes to a blk box, there is a female connector joining these two but nothing to plug into it. Should there be another tan/blu wire coming out of the harness from the shifter? Is the tan/blu wire the correct one?<br />Thanks

Tan wire with Blue stripe sounds like the lead for your overtemp circuit. To test the circuit, unscrew the bolt holding the sensor into the block and pull the sensor out (it will have a small spring with a mushroom head on the base).<br />put your ignition switch in the ON position (this will supply the circuit with 12 volts). Heat up the base of the sensor with a cigarette lighter (plumbers torch not recommended TOO HOT). When the temp of the sensor base exceeds the setpoint, it will trigger the O/T alarm by touching the sensor base to a good ground anywhere on the block (if the sensor were actually installed it should make contact with the block at all times. The alarm will contiue to sound until the sensor temp drops below the setpoint.

Thanks for the reply. The test won't work until I find out where to plug the tan/blu wire, there isn't a matching wire to be found? does it come out of the wiring harness?<br />Thanks

I failed to mention that the oil tank has been disconnected. Would this have anything to do with the heat buzzer not working? There is a male purple wire that isnt hooked also?<br />Thanks

The purple wire is the signal wire for the low level alarm on the lube oil tank (this means you MUST be premixing the oil with the fuel)! The purple wire should be capped (taped so that it can not touch the engine block)! The tan/blue wire for the temp sender should not be affected by it. If the purple wire is alloed to touch ground with the engine running with a good load (rpm) IT should sound an alarm, AND cause the engine to slow down dramatically (the engine control would assume a low oil level and slow down to prevent a burn up from the low oil condition.
