temperature sender

Hi everybody,

I recently bought my first boat a Regal 176 Valanti with a 3.0 Mercruiser where the wiring wasn't done completely right. Trying to get the temp gauge to work I figured out that the gauge itself is fine by shortcutting signal + ground. Then I followed the signal cable to the engine and saw that it was not connected anywhere

In the pic you can see the signal wire which is the disconnected one (brown). Could some tell me if this is the temp sender and what the brown-blue cable could be which is attached to the sender? I don't want to change them without knowing what I'm doing :)

thanks,
david

mercruiser repair manual is ordered and on the way :)

Re: temperature sender

Change it, the Tan (not faded brown) wire is for the gauge sender, the Tan with blue stripe wire is for the alarm. The alarm switch should be installed where the plug just left of the gauge sender is.

Re: temperature sender

@Don S.: thanks for the tip. Is the alarm needed / recommended?

@Haut Medoc: Thanks :) It's from '99. The original engine (Volvo) was replaced in 2003 with the Mercruiser engine. And since it's my first one I will post a lot of questions in the next time :D

Re: temperature sender

The alarm is recommended, and comes as standard equipment. Most boaters don't look at their gauges often enough to be of any use.
Get an OEM service manual for your engine. You need manual #26 for your engine. The drive manual is easy and free. It's online at this link

Re: temperature sender

the link is great. I wish there is something similar for the engine :) I ordered the original mercruiser manual and a SELOC repair and maintain manual. hope this was a good decision......

could the pic show the alarm (and if not what is this)? The pic is taken from below the gauges. The purple wire is cut and I didn't try so far if the brown-blue is the one which was connected to the temp sensor. If it is, can I use one sensor to drive the alarm & the gauge?

thanks,
david

Re: temperature sender

No, the gauge uses a sender, the alarm uses a sensor/switch.
