I think I am in the market so...for those of you not lucky enough to have a shop or garage please post up your pics of temporary boatels, carports, or enclosures large enough to house boats during that winter restoration.

For the price I think Costco has the best shelter.

A while back I saw a portable shelter at Sams Club big enough to park a pickup inside. I believe it was made of tent like material only a bit heavier with 1'' aluminum framework. I think they were wanting around $500.00

I have a cheap 10' x 20' carport (steel tubes and a tarp) that worked well. Definitely want to stake it down though actually I simply strap it to the boat. If that blows away you have bigger problems to worry about :D I bought it used from a lady for like $60 but Harbor Freight ought to have them pretty cheap.

It even took the snow load ok

Harbor Freight sells a few options but lately they've gotten a bit pricey. They want $300 for a 16' long portable garage, about 8' wide, then the next step is an RV enclosure for almost $900. They do make a canopy type car port in the 12x20' range for about $190, but that don't enclose the sides.
I had one of those portable garage things, the tarp material only lasted about a year, it wore through at all the supports. They hold up ok to rain and sunlight, it's the wind that tears them up.

For what they want for a soft cover canopy or carport, you can have one of those all metal free standing car ports you see all over for $899 installed.
I'm about to go that route myself I think, I can always enclose the sides myself with barn siding.

Costco has an awesome one 10X20 and around 8 feet tall at the peak. you can make it even taller with some 2" leg extensions made out of 2" PVC drain pipe. I jack mine way up in the summer and then drop it down in the winter. I have my boat sitting on a cement pad and the tent is strapped down to that with anchors. Mine is around 3 years old and starting to show its age, so I will be picking up a new one in the spring. Keeps the boat nice and dry though and I can work on it if I want as well in the winter. Beats paying for storage since I figure it costs me about 80 bucks a season if I get three seasons out of it.

Compare the cost of a kit to the cost of materials to duplicate the same thing...prices vary by region. If you can construct a small, backyard greenhouse/hothouse, you can build a car/boat shed...local regs will determine whether you can make it a permanent structure and how to do that.

Thanks guys. Building a real steel carport is not an issue and will happen in the summer, but right now I needed something 'just in case' for the winter project.

It all depends on what you want. My dad had a rounded one that held up for a couple of seasons, and then ripped pretty bad due to UV breaking it down plus snow loads, etc.

I can't even put one up in my city, even though I'm in a rural town, so you want to make sure you won't be getting one only to have to take it down and sell it for less than you paid.

Snow is not a major concern out here, but I do like to overbuild. My carport will have to be free standing and hopefully made of steel.

I have one from Canadian Tire. It's a 10x20x10 and so far has been good. I paid about $300 for it but could have went to Costco, Princess Auto (pretty much the same as Harbor Freight), or Home Hardware and got one for cheaper yet. The problem with the later mentioned ones is the tarp material looks weaker and mine is built with 2" poles rather then 1" or 1 1/2". For something quick and simple to set up the cheapo's will work for a few months no problem.
