Temporary Vehicle Registration problem.

We just purchased a used vehicle from an individual.

There was a lien on the vehicle which will be transferred to our lender, so the title is not in our possession.

When my wife tried to get a temporary tag for it, she was told that the DMV needs the title, in order to issue one, if purchased from an individual.

The DMV lady then told my wife we should have purchased it from a dealer which would have issues a temp. tag. This went over real well ;(

Anyway, it does not make sense that the vehicle must sit until the finance companies juggle everything around, whcih may take up to several weeks.

This is not brain surgury that we are trying to perform here.

It's too late in the day to contact our bank or the DMV, but was wondering if anybody else had to deal with this situation? If stopped by the cops, would having a bill of sale help?

Bill of sale and insurance card would be all you need I would think.
Maybe with a letter explaining the situation.

im freinds with the owner of a dealership so whenever i need one he gets me one. so i wouldent know but i would keep a bill of sale and insurance in the car and if you get pulled over just show that to them and explane the situation and im sure you wont have a problem

Typically you have 30-45 days to register a vehicle. If you have the Bill of Sale and insurance you should be fine...

Sounds complicated and annoying. I do not know any of the Indiana DMV laws regarding car sales. Just don't lose your cool about it...... I would consult a dealer or maybe the Police. What is that old saying..... ignorance of the law is no excuse..... I would just hate to hear about a ticket.

I went through about the same thing registering the travel trailer i bought new out of state.
I had the bill of sale,cerificate of origin from the factory and all the paperwork from the RV dealer.
DMV would not let me register it without the title.
I had to get the finance company to send me the title.It was then registered in my name and the lien holders info put on it.Then the DMV sends the lien holder the new title.....
Sounds like Indiana has about the same rules.Its a royal PIA!
I did get a 30 day tag from the dealer so i had time to get it all done.

Well they say hind sight is 20/20 DMV First stop, bank second (other finance)

All the local LEO's here ask for is drivers license and insurance, if that current tag still has time, insure it and drive on! (bill of sale is nice to have)

some (some ) states laws are very different than here

I had that happen once, and I did get pulled over (for not having a tag on the vehicle)... the bill of sale was a-ok with the cop.

Contact your DMV at the state level for the straight scoop. To many "frontline" employees don't know all the in's and out's of the title/tag process.

DMV, AAA, or Notory Public would be the first place to ask for assistance. States have different laws concerning this. When we would sell a car out of state I would check with local AAA for their advice to me and I would tell the customer to check with his AAA club or DMV to learn what he needed to do on his end. We would try to make sure i's were dotted and t's crossed BEFORE vehicle transfer. But they will have advice for you in your situation. Bill of sale may or may not help if you are pulled over - depends on the LEO and the mood he is in. As already said, ignorance is no excuse and disregard for the law is even worse. Just don't want you to get a fine over this ...
