Is it ok to temporarily disconnect the oil side of a VRO/OMS pump? Would running it without oil flow hurt the pump? This would be for a few days, probably running the pump for 5 - 10 hours total without oil flow.
I'd like to temporarily run premix in my built in tank so I can run my trolling motor without having to carry a portable tank on board (for space reasons). I can reasliy rig the kicker to run off the built in tank since the water sep. filter has two outlets, and I can just plumb in a fuel line for the kicker without disconnecting the main engine. I only troll once per season for just a couple of days. The main engine is just used for an hour or two a day, but at high speed, to get to and from, and the kicker 5-10 hours per day.
My plan would be to pull the oil hose off the pump and cap it, put a cap on the pump oil inlet, and disconnect the tank and pump alarms. Everything would pretty much remain in place to easily reconnect later.
The alternative, of course, would be to run premix in the tank and also let the oiler work, for 50:1 on the kicker, but double oiling on the main engine.
Or, just make room for the portable tank, but I'd really prefer to avoid that.
