terrible gas mileage

I have a 1978 75 hp chrysler it starts and runs great but it uses twice as much fuel than my buddie's 85 hp motor could anyone give me some tips to try and get better mileage out of it

What make and model is your Buddies 85 HP ....could even be a 4 stroke as you have given us no information....

Need more info? What RPM at WOT are you running?No Tach? Get a tiny tach and install when you test.
You should run about 5300-5500rpm at WOT.
What's yours doing? What prop?
Your boat size? What's your buddy running?Bigger boat/smaller?
