I have a Yamaha 115 HP V4 motor. It seems to be running hot. Water is coming out the small discharge hose but engine appears to be running hotter than it should be.

How can I check visually to see if water is circulating through the motor correctly?

I see a "plug" on top of both cylinder banks and am wondering if theses are water jacket holes? If they are and I remove them, will water spray out theses holes?

This is a V4 115 HP Model #115ETLJ, Code #6E5L

Any temp gauges ? How long can you hold your fingers on the exhaust jacket or head ?

Just a light and it must not work. I can hold my fingers on the head about 1 second.

I'd check the t stats first. They could be plugged up and/or not opening.

Thanks Matt. What are "t stats"? Not too familiar with terms on outboard, but need to know what is wrong before getting someone to work on it.

What year is your engine? When does the problem occur... high speed vs. idol? Is the engine primarily used in Saltwater or freshwater? Why do you think it is running hot...what does the engine do to make you think it is running hot? Giving more info will allow the folks here to better diagnose the issue

That would be a 1986 model.Only being able to hold a finger on the head for 1 second sounds too hot.The general rule of thumb is 3 seconds , no pun intended.:D
